A Slightly Pregnant Man - Jacques Demy

I have been a fan of Jacques Demy from the minute I saw "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg." And while some of his films are gorgeous and amazing, there are others that are a bit odd. Like this one - A Slightly Pregnant Man. However, you can not fault the cast of Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni. And if you place it in the time that it came out, 1973, then it seems to make a bit more sense.

With a score by the always gorgeous Michel Legrand, this is a sweet farce that has aspects of melodrama, and social commentary. It is the story of an unmarried couple - Marco and Irene - who discover that Marco is four months pregnant. Naturally this brings up questions about environment, and the additives to food messing with nature, etc. It brings into question some social gender roles, and it an interesting film to watch. There is one line from it that I really found interesting:

"The man who gives birth will be a better man for it because he will have to understand what it means to create."

Does it stand up to 2026 standards? Not really, but I think it is a very sweet timecapsule, with two amazing performers in it.
