Millennium - Chris Carter

Chris Carter is the producer and creator of some amazing television shows. He is one of my favorite TV writers, along with West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin. I find Carter's work to be imaginative, suspenseful, funny at times, and good storytelling. His shows tend to have long story arc that cross the whole season or even the full series. X-Files, which I will rewatch and write about at some point, is probably his best known work. It started in 1993 and ran till 2018, including two films. Millennium started in 1996 and ran till 1999. The series is based in the Seattle/Portland area...I think. It feels very northwest - trees, rain, smaller cities.

The series follows the work of Frank Black, an ex FBI profiler, who is now working on his own. His focus in on serial killers, and while he assists the police department, he is also being looked at by a secret society in hopes of having him join...the Millennium group. This group knows that the millennium is approaching and is not sure what will happen. At the same time, they may be causing some of the problems and crimes that Black is investigating. Adding to this basic premise is the fact that Black has flashes of insight, visions of the crime being committed, or the criminal. So it is a very dark show to be sure. Rounding out his character, Black is married and has a young daughter - who also has visions. How do you keep a five or six year old safe when they are seeing the same dark visions that you are - about the end of the world, about angels, bad people, etc? Naturally there are some humorous episodes as well. Carter is good about keeping the balance. Clearly there was a perfect time for this show to be on Television, and that was during the time it was on. Once the year 2000 hit would it be applicable? or would anyone be interested? If you like the suspense and the dark aspects of the X-Files, you will like this show as well. Less sci-fi, or unexplained things but still very good story telling.
