These books by
Alexis Hall kept popping up in my Amazon recommended list so I took a chance. They are part of a trilogy (so far), but I haven't read the most recent book. I feel that these two are a good pairing. They are about an unlikely couple (like most romances), who start out in the most unlikely way. In
Boyfriend Material, Luc O'Donnell (the protagonist, and the storyteller) has a famous father and so he is also famous by default. Luc has no contact with his dad, and is quite angry about how his father left him and his mom. That has lead to destructive behavior that Luc is working on changing but ... well it is a bit of a Rom-Com so comedy ensues. To fully clean-up his act he decides that he needs a boyfriend for his public image (which is giving his work a truly bad reputation). So he finds an unlikely person who he doesn't really like - but who happens to be in a similar situation. Oliver is almost the total opposite of Luc, and they make a deal to be each others boyfriend in public for both of their sakes. Naturally there are twists and turns, lots of comedy, and lots of big feelings...and not the best communication. But characters need to grow and change, right?
And clearly they do because the sequel is named Husband Material. This felt very much like a written version of Four Weddings and a funeral because each section seemed to contain prep for an upcoming wedding...straight, gay, queer...all of it. Add to this the fact that Luc and Oliver need to either be a part of the wedding party, or at least attend and they both start getting thoughts, and possible cold feet. While somewhat predictable, though not fully, it was a book that I had difficulty putting down because the story and writing were compelling.
While I feel that these two work very well just as their own, the follow-up book is named Father Material. I haven't read it yet, but probably will at some point. So clearly the saga continues...though after reading the first two books I'm not sure it has to. But I am not the author. I also had no idea this author had written so many books!! wow! Some of their other series look quite interesting. I will post if I decide to read more.
