Sherlock Holmes & the Case of the Silk Stocking - Simon Cellan Jones

Who doesn't love a good BBC mystery, especially when based on fantastic detectives like Sherlock Holmes. I think I picked this up because it has Rupert Everett as Holmes, and I have been of fan of his for years. I rewatched it recently and realized that it also has the stunning Helen McCrory, Michael Fassbender, and Ian Hart. Directed by Simon Cellan Jones, this has the standard BBC qualities to it so you know it looks great, and the acting is top-notch.

The story is very interesting. It is from an original idea by Allan Cubitt, and has some good twists to it. It ends up being a bit more psycho-sexual in nature than your standard Holmes stories, but it is quite good. One aspect of the writing I enjoyed was that Holmes explained his process as they went through the story so there was no "Holmes is a genius and I will never know how he did it" thought. I find that often times in detective films, the audience is not given the full thought process of the detective so we are just left to think of them as a genius. In some cases that works, but often times I want to try to understand how his/her brain is putting it all together. The DVD also comes with commentary by the director and producer. If you are a fan of Holmes, and open to various interpretations of the character, this is a good film to watch.
