Perfume: The Story of a Murderer - Tom Tykwer

A fascinating story and film. Perfume is based on the novel by Patrick Suskind, and it tells the most interesting story. The story is about a boy, born at a fishmongers in Paris, and then abandoned. However, the boy is born with the most sensitive sense of smell. He creates his own smell library in his brain and is consistently in search of new smells. This leads him to eventually follow a woman whose scent mesmerizes him. However, due to circumstances he accidentally kills her. From that moment on his wants to learn everything about preserving scent and so he apprentices himself at a Perfumery. He learns about how to distill scents, and trys to distill almost every scent around him - steel bars, the owners cat, etc. He does learn that there is another process, but the perfumer he works for doesn't know that process and so Jean-Baptiste leaves in search of learning this new process.

That is all the story I will share here. I read the book years ago and really enjoyed it. Then when this film version came out, I had to see it. It stands up and is a really good adaptation by Tykwer and others. The cast is made of Ben Whishaw as Jean-Baptiste, as well as Dustin Hoffman, and Alan Rickman. While the story is dark, it is still a fascinating narrative.
