Marry Me A Little - Skylark Opera Theatre

Skylark Opera Theatre has a wonderful production of a rarely done Sondheim musical playing this weekend at the Crane Theatre. Marry Me A Little was created originally in 1980 as a two-person show (Woman, Man) made from songs that were cut from various Sondheim productions, or written and never used. It is a wonderful work that is about an hour long and filled with glorious Sondheim music, and brilliantly witty Sondheim lyrics.

The basis of the show is a Woman and a Man live in the same apartment building and find themselves alone on a Saturday night. They do not know each other but over the course of the show they meet, fall in love, and break-up. Bergen Baker plays The Woman, and Max Wojtanowicz plays The Man. They both have gorgeous voices and are a joy to listen to. What makes it all better is that they both know their way around a lyric, an emotion, a through line. They sing wonderfully together, and there is an honesty in the production which is so charming, and sweet. Most of the songs are solos, but there are a few duets included...or songs that were arranged into a duet. I know that some folks are might be a bit scared by Sondheim, and lyrics that are too difficult to follow, or understand. Yes, there are a few songs in this production that have those thick lyrics, but you have Baker and Wojtanowicz there to guide you through the experience. Trust them both, sit back, and enjoy the show.

What I just found out while writing this is that this show is fluid when it comes to song choices. Yes, there are a few songs that stay with all the productions listed on the Wiki page, but this specific production has songs included that were not on the Wiki page. The song choices made for this production were fantastic. They told the story, they opened up the characters to be more multi-faceted...in fact one might walk away thinking that both of these characters were bisexual. But none of that really matters because the relationship the show is about is between these two characters. There is humor, lust, love, and sometimes a hint of sadness or regret. However with this fantastic music and these two performers...I walked out feeling wonderful having experienced such a great production and performance. Keep your eye on the Skylark website, and make sure to attend one of their works in this upcoming season. I don't think you will regret it.
