Absolutely Fabulous - DVD Review

Absolutly Fabulous is a TV show from the BBC that first aired in 1992. It was based on a single episode of the French and Saunders show where Jennifer Saunders played a wealthy, self-involved mother across from Dawn French who played her daughter. The daughter is very dutiful, studious, socially concious about environmental issues, or social issues, and often ends up taking charge and taking care of the mother. The mother is a total opposite - only caring about having fun, making and spending lot of money, and being famous and well-known.

This single episode was spun into an ongoing series that played on the BBC from 1992-2012. It had Jennifer Saunders as the mother - Edwina Monsoon (Eddie), and Joanna Lumley as her best friend Patsy. Eddie lives in a good part of London, and her daughter Saffron (Saffie or Saf, played by Julia Sawalha) lives with her. Patsy is often there along with Eddie's mother (June Whitfield). Eddie and Patsy are funny in a mean-spirited way. But they are so over the top it is difficult to take true offense. It is also clear that they are making fun of social climbers like their characters. The original series was aired on the BBC from 1992-1995 for three seasons followed by a two-part series finale in 1996. It was then brought back in 2000 for two more seasons with two one-hour specials ending in 2004. Finally a film was made in 2016. The full cast has such great chemistry and work so well with each other that it is just fun to watch.

The film is a crazy ride where Eddie accidently knocks Kate Moss off of a ledge at a party and then has to escape as her and Patsy both think that Moss is dead. While they do re-use some jokes from the series (which makes sense as not everyone may have watched the whole series), it is still a really fun film. From what I can see you may be able to find it on Hulu, or possibly even Peacock. It is worth giving it a watch.
