The Skin Game - Alfred Hitchcock

This 1931 black and white feature by Alfred Hitchcock is based on the play written by John Galsworthy. As with a lot of the films based on plays from that time, it is a bit of a melodrama. Two families, both well off financially (though one is an aristocratic family (Hillcrists) and the other (Hornblowers) worked their way to their fortune) are fighting over a piece of land. The Hornblower family has bought most of the land because they promise tenant farmers that they can keep working the land, but once the Hornblowers own it - the farmers are kicked off. The Hillcrists have land they need to auction off, and through some trickery the Hornblowers win the bid. However one of the men working for the Hillcrists have received informtion that the Hornblower daughter used to make money by posing as "The Other Woman" in divorce cases.

There is not much more to this film in my opinion. It was another film that Hitchcock did to fulfill a contract. The cast is fantastic with Edmund Gwenn and Helen Haye as two of the leads, as well as John Longden (from Blackmail). There are no cameo's, and I watched this as part of the Legend Series
