One of the first men I dated was a big fan of Gilbert & Sullivan, as well as P. G. Wodehouse. I was not a fan, nor am a fan, of G&S, and I had never really read Wodehouse. I may have seen some episode on PBS at some point, and I know that I had a recording of the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical "By Jeeves." I was not a fan. I didn't really understand what was going on or why it was entertaining. Recently I joined TikTok and started following an English rare bookseller named Tom Ayling who works at Jonkers Rare Books. He posts some really great book and lit content, and he is adorable. However, back to the point, he posted about how he needed a break from all the serious things going on so he grabbed one of his favorite books - a P. G. Wodehouse. That inspired me to grab this little tome at my local Half Price Books.
It was an enjoyable read. Most of the short stories were Jeeves and Wooster stories, but there were a few in that same vein, but different characters. It felt that all of the stories had the same basic plot. The language was fun with some really great 1920's slang. I am glad I read it - though I'm not sure I will read Wodehouse again. He is just not my style, but he does have a very distinct voice which I liked.
If you haven't read any, give him a shot and experience his writing for yourself.
